The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has given a major update on Ebola in Nigeria today, Sunday October 25, 2026 – monitoring 53 primary contacts linked to the confirmed case in Abuja.
NCDC Director-General Dr Jide Idris disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja, saying the agency had identified 53 contacts and investigated two suspected cases, including the confirmed index case and a suspected case in Rivers State which later tested negative for Ebola【6428981966932471062†L10-L14】.
According to NCDC, the 53 contacts comprise 44 people linked to the health facility where the patient was treated and 9 additional contacts, including 3 household members – the patient’s driver, chef and husband【6428981966932471062†L15-L19】.
The contacts include healthcare workers, household members and others who may have been exposed. They are being monitored for 21 days after last exposure, with temperature checks twice daily【6428981966932471062†L17-L21】.
Idris said contacts will be monitored at home if no symptoms, and quickly isolated if symptoms develop【6428981966932471062†L158-L163】.
The confirmed case is a 42-year-old woman who returned from Uganda through Addis Ababa on October 3, 2026【6428981966932471062†L20-L22】. She developed fever on October 7, visited private hospitals on October 10 and 11, and was confirmed positive on October 20 by NCDC National Reference Laboratory【6428981966932471062†L177-L183】.
She presented with fever, diarrhoea, generalised body aches and sore throat, with no bleeding reported【6428981966932471062†L181-L185】. NCDC says she is now stable and responding to treatment in isolation.
In a new development, NCDC revealed it is paying N100,000 per person weekly to those under monitoring for accommodation and feeding after contacts complained of financial strain【6428981966932471062†L59-L68】.
“We are paying for their accommodation; we are paying for their feeding. Some of them are asking for a stipend to maintain their families,” Idris said. “We are providing N100,000 per person per week just to maintain their comfort and feeding”【6428981966932471062†L67-L70】.
He described it as emergency intervention not planned for【6428981966932471062†L69-L72】.
No. NCDC clarified that the suspected case investigated in Rivers State tested negative【6428981966932471062†L102-L106】. As of Oct 25 update, Nigeria has only ONE confirmed case.
NCDC urges private hospitals to strengthen screening, triage and infection prevention, and ensure health workers have protective equipment【6428981966932471062†L233-L236】. About 12 public and private labs can now test for Ebola【6428981966932471062†L48-L51】.
If you are contacted by NCDC officials, cooperate and give accurate info about movements and symptoms.
